Leakey
Richard Leakey shakes up Kenya's politics
A white man is once again seeking to lead one of the continent's major powers. Dr Richard Leakey may offer the only hope for Kenya as it sinks under the weight of widespread political corruption.
We background the launch of Leakey's Kenyan opposition political party as he fights changes in Kenyan law which already make the new party illegal. Leakey and a black opposition leader explain the new party's agenda and their grievances against President Moi's government. Leakey left Kenya Wildlife Services after a smear campaign by senior MPs but he may prove far more dangerous as an open political opponent. International criticism can only help the new opposition and Western donors, worried about backsliding on reforms, are reviewing aid to Kenya. Leakey's party will unite the opposition and attract international support.
