The Guru of Ganja
California's radical drug laws allowing patients to use cannabis has provoked a bitter legal battle between the state and federal government.
In 1996, Californians voted for the legalisation of Cannabis for medicinal purposes. But this kind of liberal attitude has not been welcomed by the White House. "We believe that the legalisation is a smokescreen - the real agenda is to make all drugs legal," posits the Mayor of the Drug Enforcement Administration. 'Legal' Cannabis farmer Ed Rosenthal soon found himself at the centre of a very 'political' trial. Despite being allowed to grow the plant by state authorities, the federal judge refused to let the jury hear evidence to his defence. Many see him as a 'political prisoner' and anger is spreading as those with terminal diseases are being denied this unique form of pain relief.
