"We will not be driven out. We intend to remain here," vows settler Moshe Saperstein defiantly. Having lost an arm in the Yom Kippur war and been wounded in a terrorist attack, he's already fought for the right to live in Gaza. Now, he's preparing to take on the Government. And he's not alone. The settlers' organisation, Yesha Council, plans to deploy 100,000 settlers to the Gaza strip and West Bank to resist the evictions. "We hope to gain experience from civil disobedience demonstrations all over the globe," states Yisrael Medad, spokesperson for Yesha Council. They're also considering ways of combating the wide international support Sharon has gained for his disengagement plan. One option is to send "people to Washington to work on Congress, especially among the right wing, neo-conservatives and Christian Right." But while the settlers plan their resistance, Palestinians in Gaza are eagerly awaiting their departure. "We want to live in happiness, without any fear and with freedom of movement," states resident Abu Anwar Ghaly. For now, there is a wary calm in Gaza. But both sides know this peace could easily be shattered. (Mikkelsen)
