Ukraine in the Crosshair of Moscow
The Ukrainian Port Controlled by Russian Forces
Sevastopol, the heart of Russia's naval power in the Ukraine, has been occupied by Russian troops. Amidst fears of separatism, this archive report offers a rare glimpse into the Russian military's hold on Crimea.
It is a sunny day in Sevastopol and the Russian Fleet is celebrating its birthday. Jubilent crowds wave Russian flags and the fleet is decorated with streamers. You could be forgiven for assuming that this was Russia. Oleksandr Popvych is a police officer here. "I was born in Ukraine, I live in Ukraine, I am Ukrainian", he says. "Why do I feel like a foreigner here?" In the aftermath of Russia's war with Georgia, NATO brought a ship here at Ukraine's request. The Russian inhabitants were furious and violent protests ensued. The fleet shows no sign of leaving. "We will become a second Ossetia", says local man Mikolai Melnikov. "I have plans to move elsewhere before open conflict breaks out."
