Ramadan in Space
Former male model Dr Sheik Muszaphar Shukor has become Malaysia's first astronaut. But being the first devout Muslim in space during Ramadan, his trip has presented an interesting set of challenges.
'In space you may be closer to God, but which way is Mecca?' This is the question that 100 religious scholars spent two days agreeing on. With the sun going up and down every 45 minutes in space, in theory Muslims should pray 80 times a day. Dr Sheik has become a poster boy for progressive Islam and science, and is keen to inspire. "'I hope that a Muslim could lead Muslim scientists, scholars, to bring back the glory of Islam'."
