Inside northern Storm
For three months now, hundreds of Syrian troops have been trapped inside Mennagh Airbase. We gain exclusive access to the rebel group besieging the government's last military stronghold in northern Aleppo.
"The army are desperate and bored sitting like this," says Najim'adeen, commander of the Northern Storm brigade and former fruit seller. Rebel anti-aircraft guns have made it almost impossible for the government to re-supply its trapped forces with food, fuel and ammunition. But a final push to storm the airbase is out of the question for the rebels; "there are many heavy weapons in the airport...and maybe some chemical weapons". The nearby town of Marra'naz is now abandoned. It is littered with unexploded cluster bombs which rained on the town in what some see as a policy of collective punishment, designed to destroy communities thought to have spawned the uprising.
