One Man, One City, Three Evictions
Up to 22,000 families were evicted from their homes to make way for the Rio Olympics. However, this was just a part of a long, often brutal conflict between Rio's poorest citizens and their government.
"What was supposed to be a model city turned out to be hell", observes Altair Guimarães, forcibly removed from his idyllic childhood home in Ilha dos Caiçaras to make way for a luxury property development, and moved to the violent favela, 'Cidade de Deus'. This was the first of multiple evictions in a life led in constant battle with a government that favours the rich. "These removals happen because of greed", Altair laments.
