The violent murder of prolific environmentalist Berta Cáceres last year shook Honduras. More Hondurans are killed per capita than anywhere else in the world for defending land and over 80% of cases go unsolved.
"We've been asked 'what will happen in Honduras...with these levels of corruption that have brought people screaming into the streets?'" acknowledges Juan Jimenez, of anti-corruption commission MACCIH. With native communities striving to save their land from developments, a rift has formed between locals and the political elite. "Our territory is life itself", said activist Margarita Pineda, "If we don't protect it, who will?"
