Baby Boomer President
Taiwan's most progressive president?
A new Taiwan is in the air. President Chen Shui-bian, nicknamed A-Bian, is touted as being the most progressive President Taiwan has ever seen.
His life is already being made into a movie. Fireworks flare and music plays in Taipei during his inaugeration. Meanwhile, Beijing glowers over the prospect of having a radical president in Taiwan, since it may spell trouble for the grand dream of reunification of all of China. Rising from a very humble country background, Chen became president after overcoming tremendous hardships. His wife was victim of a hit-and-run which left her a paraplegic. He has had his party banned, been jailed for libel, and labelled a rebel in the past. With a platform geared towards attracting the youth with a theme store and pop music, many liken their new president to Bill Clinton. And like Clinton, Chun knows his every move is being scrutinized by the mainland.
