Sulphur Mining
The terrible conditions of Indonesia's sulphur mines
At Kawah Ijen, miners are exposed to poisonous fumes, burning acid, and treacherous journeys - all for $2 a day.
Sulphur is an excellent bleaching agent, used in household cleaners and in the refinement of sugar. Three hundred men are employed in this mine on the crater floor to extract the valuable substance. Yet protective clothing and adequate footwear are non-existent, and few of these men will see a healthy old age.
