Exit Route

Saving the children of Gaza

Exit Route Raouf Salti is a doctor and director of NGO Children's Right for Healthcare. Since the war in Gaza, he has been helping wounded children and their families to cross from Gaza to Egypt and then to Geneva, for life-saving treatment.
Asmaa works for the NGO welcoming Palestinian mothers and their children to Cairo. "They're really, really stressed. It's catastrophic" she says. War planes are "all they've been hearing for three months," taking a huge toll on their mental health. Salti helps Youssef, a 16 year-old refugee, to a hamburger – his first meal eaten in safety. "He is very thin for a 16 year-old, only 30 kilos. When I touch his hand it is just bone, there's nothing left." Youssef lost a leg when an airstrike hit as he was waiting in line for water. His mother recounts her son's life before as a young, football-mad teenager. "He had three footballs on his desk...they were so precious to him...God knows if the balls still exist, or even the house."
