When Justin Trudeau, Canadian Prime Minister, accused India of the killing of a Sikh activist, the world held its breath. Inside Punjab, the growing tensions between Sikhs and the Indian government are clear.
Punjab is a Sikh homeland, where a growing separatist movement calls for the formation of an independent state: Khalistan. "We will fight against our government, we will get our freedom," shouts a protestor. Dal Khalsa, a Sikh separatist group, are closely watched by Indian intelligence agents: "we see them [agents] daily. Every protest, every function of Dal Khalsa, they come," says Kanwar Pal Singh, a member of Dal Khalsa. The recent death of Hardeep Singh, a prominent separatist, has revived the fight. "When India failed to get Hardeep Singh Nijjar legally, they killed him illegally" continues Kanwar Pal Singh.
