Arctic Survival

Arctic Survival Without whale meat, the people of Chukotka risk starvation. They're angry that the IWC will only let them hunt by traditional methods.
The Russian region of Chukotka is one of the most isolated places in the world. In winter, the average temperature is -30Âșc and people survive on less than $10 a month. They depend on whale meat as their main food source. "If they prohibit us from getting this meat, we will simply die out," states one local. But the International Whaling Commission will only allow them to hunt if they use traditional methods like hand thrown harpoons. And that's a ruling the hunters believe is placing them in danger. "The grey whale is dangerous and very aggressive when hunted," states official Valentin Ilyashenko. The walrus skin boats they're meant to use fall apart too easily and whales are too heavy to drag ashore by hand. Hunters are frustrated that people with no understanding of their lifestyle can have such a large impact on their lives.
