Although Uganda had successfully managed to contain its AIDS epidemic, reducing the number of infected Ugandans from twenty percent down to six, its achievement is being jeopardised by the growing popularity of US-backed Christian movements which promote abstinence as the only solution against AIDS. The weight those organisations have gained in the country is explained by the increasing aid funds coming from the US. The message they spread among young people sounds just like the doctrine of American moralists. It puts young Ugandans at risk because it excludes information about condoms and triggers a return to shame and ignorance. As a result of this surge of conservatism, health centres are no longer allowed to put free condoms on their shelves. In a country with the highest rate of teenage pregnancy in the world, this marketing of abstinence is sadly inadequate. The consequence is an increase in the rate of infection and yet more AIDS orphans left alone.
