Historians of the Ocean
Scientists explore the secret history of the oceans
Using modern techniques to analyse centuries-old fossils, scientists in California are reconstructing a history of the world's oceans. Their aim is to better understand how our waters looked 200 years ago.
"The ocean is the beating heart of the climate system." Kyle Van Houtan is the Science Director at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in Northern California. His scientists are comparing specimens collected over the last 200 years with those found today to explore how our oceans, and their wildlife, have changed over time. For Kyle, the project is fundamental for generating "an informed baseline for what a healthy ocean is."
