As Russia raids gay clubs, Ukraine's LGBT scene opens up
Before the war, Ukraine was not a haven of peace for homosexuals. Paradoxically, the war context gave a new lease of freedom to Ukrainian LGBTQ, who were able to organize techno parties in the capital, Kyiv, while getting directly involved in the fighting on the front line.
“It's a place where you can express who you are.” Organising LGBT tech parties in Kyiv every month allows for the community to maintain a sense of community and belonging even in the backdrop of an ongoing war. The plight of the LGBT community in Ukraine has "long been very difficult,” yet, this documentary illuminates how the war efforts of the LGBT community in the war against Russia has reaffirmed Ukrainian sentiments on fighting for a society that is defined by democracy, independence and freedom: “LGBTQ+ fight on the front line as much as heterosexuals.”
